Maribor might be the second-largest city in Slovenia but it has all the charm of a fairytale village. Wandering through the streets of this medieval city and exploring the surrounding hills is the perfect way to get some well-deserved peace and quiet with the family.
Maribor is located in the north-east corner of Slovenia on the banks of the river Drava. The city is cuddled by hillside wine-regions on all sides, perfect for walking and sampling the local tipple! Like many cities in southern-central Europe, Maribor has a seasonal climate that varies from freezing in the winter to mid-to-high twenties (°C) in the summer. This makes it equally perfect for a summer trip or winter retreat.
Just like the weather, the hills surrounding Maribor transform with the seasons. During the winter, you can take your little ones up Maribor Pohorje to go skiing. In warmer weather, they’re perfect for hiking, cycling and outdoor activities. If you don’t fancy breaking too much of a sweat carrying your little hiker up there, you can always take the cable car up to the top and enjoy the beautiful view of the city instead.
Back in town, you must check out the Old Square which dates back to the 15th century and the riverside which is a lovely place for a picnic or feeding the city’s swans. If you time your holiday right, you might be able to shimmy and shake with your little travellers at the city’s two-week arts festival, which happens every year in June. The international event has music and dance performances, as well as mimes, magicians and acrobats - with acts coming from across the world.
After a day exploring the city or roaming the hills, the whole family will have worked up an appetite! Luckily, Maribor is packed full of lovely restaurants. Local cuisine usually consists of grilled meat and hearty vegetables. Otherwise, there’s a wide selection of Italian and seafood restaurants. The choice is yours!
If you want a city retreat with a relaxed atmosphere and the chance to go enjoy the countryside, Maribor could be your next family destination!
Cheers! (Na zdravje!)
