Spring Step: Five activities to celebrate spring with your kids

The sun is shining, the birds are singing and spring is springing - that’s right, it’s the time of year that the world wakes up from its winter slumber. Spring is a great opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors with your kids. Here are five activities to celebrate with your kids.

Plant daffodils

Is there anything more symbolic of spring than the sight of daffodils? These bright cheery flowers are one of the first signs that winter is over and warmer weather is on its way. Daffodils are the perfect choice to plant with your kids as they are perennial, which means that they only need to be planted once and they will bloom reliably during spring each year. Why not create a ‘spring zone’ in the garden or a spring pot with daffodils to celebrate these wonderful flowers.

Go for a spring equinox walk

Going for a walk in spring has been the inspiration for writers, poets, painters and musicians for centuries. Why? Because it’s so beautiful! Take your kids to your local park or nearest natural area on the spring equinox to take in all the wonderful sights and smells of the season. Make sure to remind your little one to look and listen out for all the signs of spring.

Set up a bird feeder

If you stick your head out of the window in January and do the same in March, you’ll notice one immediate difference: birdsong. The return of cute little birdies is one of the most obvious signs of springtime. An amazing (and simple) way to make the most of this seasonal change for your children is to set up a bird feeder.

Here’s a guide:

What you’ll need:

  • A plastic bottle
  • A pencil
  • Some string
  • Scissors
  • Birdseed

Here’s how to make it:

  • Make four small holes around the edge of the bottom of the bottle (these will keep your seeds nice and fresh for the birds).
  • Make two small holes on either side of the bottle an inch above the bottom - push the pencil through these holes.
  • Make two larger holes in-line with, and a few inches above, the pencil.
  • Make two small holes at the top of the bottle, put some string through them and tie in a loop.
  • Fill the bottle with birdseed and put the lid back on.
  • Hang the bottle from a tree or fence post and watch all the hungry birds visiting your homemade bird feeder.

Spring snapping

Last, but not least, why not create a memento for your kids to remember. Simply head out for a walk in your nearest natural space and take a camera with you to take snaps of all the signs of spring. When you get home make sure to get all of the photos printed for your child to put into their very own springtime scrapbook! You could even do one for all the other seasons.

Spring is a wonderful time of year - making the most of it with your children is an important way to celebrate the changing of seasons and the rebirth of nature. Take on one of our spring activities and we’re that this special time will feel even more special!
