Destination Next: Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh isn’t just the bonny capital of Scotland - it’s one of Europe’s prettiest cities too. This hub of winding cobbled streets, secret historical nooks and fascinating cultural spots are just waiting to be explored.

Edinburgh is located just off the coast of eastern Scotland. It’s nestled amongst seven hills and is known for the beautiful undulation of its streets. Despite the picturesque landscape, you’ll need to bring a coat and scarf - Edinburgh rarely sees temperatures higher than the low 20s °C and spends most of the year in single-digits (°C). However, what the city doesn’t have in hot sunny weather, it more than makes up for in culture and history!

You could start your trip off at the Edinburgh Castle, a historic fortress on the top of Castle Rock looking over the city below. Your little ones are sure to love roaming around the Great Hall, having their picture taken next to Mons Meg (one of the largest cannons in the world) and getting a glimpse at the oldest crown jewels in the country.

Once you’re done playing kings and queens at the castle, it’s time to head down to the Royal Mile - one of Edinburgh’s main cultural strips. The Royal Mile is dotted with cute cafes, old pubs, independent stalls and street performers that are sure to dazzle your little ones! If that’s not enough to excite them, you can always take them on the Harry Potter tour.

Your little witches and wizards will feel like they’re in a truly magical world on the Harry Potter tour. Edinburgh was one of the main inspirations for the story of the boy who lived. You can be sorted into Hogwarts houses outside the school that inspired Hogwarts, discover the cafe where J.K Rowling wrote the first book and take a trip down the real Diagon Alley!

If you’re looking for something that’s more cultural than magical, you can visit the National Museum of Scotland - there’s a lot to take in, from the age of the dinosaurs to the technology of the future. With over 8,000 objects on display, this museum is a fantastic educational adventure for your little learners.
